Test format

IELTS assesses your English proficiency on a scale from 1- 9 in four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You have a choice of two test versions IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training depending on the requirements set by the organization where you plan to work or study. Listening and speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the reading and writing components varies depending on which test you take.

The IELTS uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you are assessed by having a real-life conversation with a real person. The speaking component can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. Your test centre will advise.

The listening, reading and writing components of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day in less than three hours (2 hours and 45 minutes) with no breaks in between them.
